Windows 8’s uptake has so far been pretty disappointing, with the “modern” operating system cited as one of the reasons why Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer was forced to leave the company.

The latest set of figures provided by market researcher Net Applications indicates that Windows 8 has indeed continued its growth in August, but its results are still behind those of Windows 7 and Windows XP.

Windows 8 has reached a market share of 7.41 percent last month, which keeps it on the third top operating system in the world. Windows 7 had a share of 45.63 percent, followed by Windows XP with 33.66 percent.

Windows 8, on the other hand, has grown by more than 2 points in just a single month, boosting its market share from 5.40 percent in July to 7.41 percent last month. The overall uptake, on the other hand, remains fairly disappointing, as Windows 8 has been around for more than 10 months.
