Both Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 have lost users worldwide, but as far as the United Kingdom is concerned, Microsoft’s modern operating systems continue their growth.

Figures provided by market researcher StatCounter reveal that Windows 8 has grown so much that it managed to finally overtake Windows XP, thus becoming the fourth most popular operating system in the country.

At this point, Windows 7 is obviously the top choice for Britons, being installed on no less than 51.03 percent of the computers in the country. Surprisingly, Mac OS X is second with a market share of 15.24 percent, while Windows 8.1 is third with 11.4 percent.

Windows 8 comes next with 7.13 percent, followed by Windows XP with 6.97 percent.

Combined, however, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 have a total market share of 18.53, enough to become the second most-used platform in the country.

Probably the best news for Microsoft is the fact that Windows XP is quickly losing users, although the company would have expected the same to happen all over the world and not only in the United Kingdom. As I’ve told you, Redmond might need two more years to completely kill Windows XP, but it remains to be seen how fast users are actually willing to dump their favorite OS for a newer one.
