These tiny apps are still experiencing a surprisingly big success

The lack of a Start button in Windows 8 remains a very controversial subject, even though more than six months have passed since the public debut of the new Microsoft operating system.

And even though rumors are now suggesting that Microsoft could bring back this successful Windows feature in Windows Blue, third-party apps continue to experience an amazing success.

Just like Neowin.net notes, statistics provided by AllThingsD indicate that two of the most popular Start Menu apps, namely Start8 and Pokki, have both generated 8 million downloads, despite the $5 (€3.8) price tag of the first.

As far as Microsoft is concerned, the Start button might return in Windows Blue, but instead of launching a Start Menu, it might actually serve as a simple shortcut for the newly-released Start Screen.

Blue is projected to be unveiled next month in preview form, while the stable version is likely to hit the shelves in August or September.
