Windows 8 was officially launched six months ago and, even though the tech giant invested a fortune to make it successful, the operating system is yet to take off.

Microsoft hasn't provided any new details on Windows 8's sales but, according to market researcher StatCounter, the new software is increasing its market share at a rather slow pace.

At this point, Windows 8 has a market share of 4.69 percent, which makes it the fifth most popular operating system in the world. Windows 7 obviously tops the rankings with 53.89 percent, followed by Windows XP with 27.7 percent, Mac OS X with 7.11 percent and Vista with 6.06 percent.

Windows 8 is already getting ready to receive its first major upgrade, as Microsoft is reportedly making the final adjustments to what's internally called Windows Blue, an important makeover expected to bring both performance and UI improvements.
