Depending on whom you ask, Windows Phone currently has a 7 to 10 percent market share in the mobile industry across the world and it’s way behind rivals Android and iOS.

But the actual number of users on Windows Phone has never been disclosed, and Microsoft actually tried to remain tight-lipped on any figures that might provide us with a glimpse of how its smartphone platform is actually doing against rivals.

Microsoft’s partners, however, provide pretty interesting numbers every once in a while, and today it was Opera’s turn to share Windows Phone statistics.

Erik Harrell, chief financial officer and chief strategy officer at Opera, has revealed during a conference call that his company wants to make the most of the “50 million users” that are currently on Windows Phone with a high-quality browser like Opera Mini.

“Opera has always been cross-platform, there are 50 million users on this platform so obviously we’re going to be a part of it. It’s also been a very smooth product we have developed in close collaboration with Microsoft, after we announced our partnership some months ago,” he said.

Opera Mini is already available on Windows Phone, and as part of an announcement signed recently, the application became the official browser on Microsoft-branded smartphones running Redmond’s operating system. The first such device is about to go on sale in China, while others will launch soon.
