Microsoft increases the market share of its mobile OS

Windows Phone still has a difficult time competing with Android and iOS, and statistics provided by Kantar for the three-month period ending in January 2015 are living proof that Microsoft still has to work hard to become relevant in this side of the market.

Basically, these statistics are full of ups and downs, as Windows Phone performed really well in some countries but achieved poor results in others.

For instance, Windows Phone lost 1.7 percent of its users in the United Kingdom and now has a share of 7.4 percent in the country, as well as 3.7 percent in Italy and 3 percent in Spain, where it's now powering 13.2 and 10.4 percent of the devices there, respectively.

On the other hand, Microsoft's mobile platform improved its share by 3.5 percent in France, where it now holds 13 percent of the market, 2.1 percent in Germany to reach 8.9 percent, and 3.5 percent in Australia to 8.7 percent.

Overall, Windows Phone still struggles to convince users to give it a try in some specific countries, but it's still well behind rivals Android and iOS pretty much everywhere, even in countries where it holds a pretty decent market share.

Obviously, all hopes are on Windows 10, as Microsoft plans to finally challenge Android and iOS in a much more effective way when the new OS becomes available, but it remains to be seen how many people will actually be willing to give up on their favorite platform for Microsoft's.
