iTunes can be a difficult application when it comes to managing files on your iOS device, but there are third-party apps that simplify this and bring new features to the table, such as iTools.

Available for iPhone, iPad, and iPod and offering support for the latest iOS version, iTools is wrapped in a clean and attractive interface that makes all features easy to reach, whether you want to copy music and photos, or create ringtones and examine logs to find out what happened at the last error. We're breaking it down in this guide to show you how it works.

Install iTunes unless you already have it, and plug in your iPhone, iPad or iPod into the PC. The device's contents should be automatically loaded when firing up iTools.

The main components of the application can be accessed from the upper part of the window: Device, Apps, Music, Photos, Videos, Books, Information, and Toolbox.

Device and Apps

In Device, go to Fast Optimization to run a scan and find out how much space can be freed up by removing Caches, Temporary Files, Cookies, App Cache, and Rarely used Apps. All these categories are selected by default, so you can click the Optimize button to erase them.

In Apps -> Local Apps -> iOS Apps, you can view a list of all apps installed on your device, install new ones from the computer (click Add to open an .ipa or .pxl file), uninstall the ones you don't need (select an app and click Delete) or update apps to the latest versions (click the Update tab, choose the app and click Update).

Go to Apps Online -> iTools Game Center if you're interested in installing apps with games provided by the developer. For the first install, it's necessary to log in with your Apple ID. Afterward, just click the Install button of the game that caught your eye.

Music

In Music, select your device name from the column on the left to view all audio tracks stored. Click Import and Select File or Select Folder to add new songs from the computer using the integrated file browser (for Select File, add from .mp3, .wav, .m4r or .m4a files) or tree view (for Select Folder) and then clicking Ok. You can also drag and drop files in the window.

To copy files from the device to the computer, tick the boxes of the songs, click Export, and choose where you want to save them on your hard disk using the tree view. Click Delete to remove any selected files from the device, New Playlist to create a new playlist (set File Name and click Ok), or Make Ringtones (more on that later). Right-click one or more files (hold down Ctrl while clicking to select multiple files) to Add to Playlist (select the playlist name).

Go to System Ringtones and click Import to add audio files as the device's ringtones.

Photos and Videos

In Photos, find your device's name from the column on the left and click Photos or Albums to view all images or photo albums stored. In Photos, click an image or hold down Ctrl while clicking to make a multiple selection and Export them to the hard disk by indicating a saving directory in the tree view. You can also Delete the pictures, filter them By Month, and put together a Slideshow on the spot.

In Albums, you can not only explore pictures but also create a New Album, Import albums into the device (click a folder to create an album using its name and assign all containing images), Export them to the hard disk, and Delete albums. You can even access your iCloud Photo Stream to view pictures stored in the cloud (Apple ID authentication is required).

In Videos, locate the name of your device in the column on the left and click Movies, TV Shows, and Music Videos to view all these video files stored. In all three cases, it's possible to Import new video files from the computer (.mp4, .m4v, .mov, .rmvb, .avi, .wmv, .mkv, .flv, .f4v format) while keeping in mind that iTools must be allowed to download additional components right away (fast and free) to be able to convert the files to a type supported by the Apple device. Plus, you can Export videos to the computer and Delete the ones you no longer need.

Books and Information

In Books -> iBooks, you can check out a list with all documents stored on your device and Import new ones from .epub, .pdf and .txt format (Select File, Select Folder, or drag and drop the items in the window). Additionally, it's possible to Export the text files to the computer and Delete the ones you have already read and no longer need.

In Information, select your device from the column on the left and click Contacts to view all people (Name and Phone number) stored in your address book. Select a person's name and click the Edit button on the right to set or modify the First and Last name, Branch, Title, Company, Group and Cellphone number, Add more fields (Birthday, Phone, Email, URL, Address, Date, Instant Message, Memorandum), as well as to Add Photos. Click Save to apply modifications.

Click New to create a new contact by filling out the same kind of details, Import to import this data from Backup, Outlook, Gmail, a CSV or VCF file, and Export to export the Selected contact or All contacts to Local Backup, Outlook, Gmail, VCard or CSV format. You can also delete any selected contacts and click Remove Duplication to find and remove duplicate entries (their info is merged into a single contact).

In addition to Contacts, you can view, create and save Notes, Bookmarks, Calendar entries and Messages. In Bookmarks, click Import to quickly add bookmarks from IE (Internet Explorer), HTML or a Backup file. Click Backup to create a backup file with the selected bookmarks or messages (in Messages).

Toolbox

iTools features a wide range of practical utilities to help deal with various issues concerning the iPhone, iPad or iPod, grouped into Data Management, Device Management and Advanced Features.

The Ringtone Maker gives you the possibility of creating a ringtone on the spot from any audio file (From Device or From PC). Data Migrate can be used to move data from one device to another, Super Backup lets you create local backups of Contacts, Photos, Apps, Music, Messages and Videos, while Super Restore can extract any items from saved backups and restore them on the device.

With File Explorer, you can navigate the device's filesystem using a tool similar to Windows Explorer. iTunes Backup/Restore can be used for creating backups from the device and storing them into the iTunes library, as well as for restoring said backups.

Battery Master shows details about Battery Information and Estimate Usage, Real-time Screenshot takes a snapshot of the current display of the device, Desktop Management can be used to re-arrange the icons on the screen, Reauthorization quickly performs some automatic repairs, but it's not explicit about it, while Portable Disk can be used to store any types of files in folders isolated from the rest of the contents (to later transfer them to another computer, for example).

In Advanced Features, you can deploy an SSH Tunnel (if OpenSSH is installed on the device), view a Real-time log of the system and save details, explore the Crash Log, use the Firmware Downloader to download any firmware Version by specifying the Device Name and Model, as well as use the Flush Wizard to effortlessly update the IOS.
