New version of Skype up for grabs on Linux

Microsoft has just released a new version of Skype for Linux that brings many more improvements as compared to the previous builds, including a dark theme.

Now at version 1.9, Skype for Linux continues to be part of the alpha development stage, so while Microsoft has indeed fixed many of the issues it found in the application, there are also bugs that are very likely to be discovered as you use it.

First and foremost, the new version of Skype adds the ability to mute notifications for specific conversations, but it also includes an option to disable emoticons if you like to chat the traditional way.

There’s also support for the /me command and support for system HTTPS proxy, as well as improved message quoting, which works with CTRL+C and a new option that makes it possible to reveal the full date and time as a tooltip when hovering message time.

But without a doubt, the biggest improvement in this update is the addition of a dark theme that makes the app look really good, although we do admit that more refinements are still needed. You can activate the dark theme from Settings > Personalization > Dark theme.

You can check out the full changelog in the box after the jump, but Microsoft is expected to implement even more options in the coming updates, especially because the next release is likely to bring Skype to version 2.0, which is quite an important milestone.

Thanks for the tip, 11 11!
