New version of the app now available for download

Microsoft has rolled out a new version of Skype for Linux, once again introducing a couple of new options supposed to improve the general experience with the app.

Skype for Linux version 1.8 comes with a new option to mark all unread messages as read, so if you’re the kind of user who receives lots of messages, but wants to have them flagged as read in a second, this update should really come in handy.

Additionally, Microsoft has updated the search option to support non-Latin characters, while also fixing installation issues and repository setup on Debian-based distributions. There are also several stability improvements, and Microsoft says that noticeable better performance is offered.

As you can see, this is an update that’s focused more on refining performance of the application, rather than on adding new functionality, although it’s no secret that users still hope for Microsoft to add a bunch of other features that are already available on Windows.

Screen sharing, for instance, is not yet available, even though it’s one of the most requested features for Skype, but given that Microsoft promises to work together with users on improving the application, expect more significant updates to be released in the coming months.

For the moment, keep in mind that Skype for Linux is still part of the Alpha stage, so you might still come across bugs and other issues as you use it.

Thanks for the tip, 11 11!
