Microsoft has recently released a new update for the Linux version of Skype, implementing one very eagerly awaited feature and plenty of bug fixes.

Skype 1.13 for Linux is still in alpha stage, but introduces SMS support, which means that Linux users can now send SMS messages straight from their desktops. This was one of the most requested features since Skype debuted in alpha, and Microsoft is now rolling out the first implementation in this version.

At the same time, the Skype update also brings an update to Electron 1.4.7, and support for remote escalation of the 1-1 call to group call. Microsoft says that this version also includes better crash reporting, as well as support for authentication token revocation.

It goes without saying that Skype is indeed improving and this new SMS sending feature is living proof, and Microsoft once again calls for Linux users to give the app a try and send feedback in order to continue rolling out new tools based on their suggestions.

Skype for Linux continues to be in alpha development stage, and Microsoft emphasizes that this is the moment when everyone in the Linux community can contribute to improving the app, so if you do decide to give it a shot, make sure you also submit feedback.

Of course, you can give Skype for Linux a try right now and click here to get the DEB or the RPM packages right now. The full changelog is available below.
