More often than not, when you are sending data over the Internet, it is split into small packets that are transmitted individually and do not have to follow the same route necessarily. When all the packets that form the original message arrive to their destination, then they are recompiled into the original data. In the eventuality that the data does not arrive fully or you get errors, then you can test the connection or route via traceroute.

Windows includes a traceroute utility embedded into the operating system, but sometimes it may not be enough to keep track of large sets of data when you are troubleshooting or attempting to diagnose connection issues. This is when you need to rely on specialized tools. WinMTR.NET application was developed to be a clone of the popular Linux Matt's Traceroute program.

You can get started by specifying the host or domain and, after you hit the Start button, the utility displays a comprehensive list of routes that are currently used by the packets send and received. The app provides you with a summary of the best, average, worst and last packet send, so that you can determine immediately if there is a serious issue that requires your attention.
