Proxomitron

Proxomitron is a lightweight and flexible application that provides you with a powerful HTTP web filtering proxy. Designed to enhance your browsing experience, this small tool can help you filter online content and re-write web pages entirely.

The interface is simple and user-friendly, enabling you to edit the available filter rules and view the active ones. You can save the current settings to a configuration file and load it later, in order to avoid modifying filters again and again.

To make it work, you have to change your browser's proxy settings to meet the application's requirements. After you do so, any connections the browser makes are first filtered by Proxomitron.

The software comes with a collection of already-configured rules to filter web page content, as well as outgoing and incoming headers. You can freeze GIF animations, replace banners, limit banner text and kill JavaScript banners, specific applets or Java animations. Also, it allows you to remove the off-site images or even every image displayed by selected web pages.

Numerous other options are available: you can remove or replace the web page background, filter sounds, block pop-up windows, disable JavaScript, suppress all the JavaScript errors and more.

In addition to that, the application provides filters for the HTTP header, allowing you to enable or disable web page encoding, control cache, choose the content type, automatically kill cookies, authorize proxy connections and change the user agent (Lynx, Netscape, Opera, SpaceBison).

Every filter is fully editable, but if that is not enough, you can also create a new filter rule from scratch using the built-in filter editor.

The ongoing activity, as well as the modifications made by a filter to a certain web page, is logged to the HTTP message log window, as long as the page stays open.

In conclusion, Proxomitron can give you more control over the web content you are viewing, enabling you to apply custom filters to the visited web pages. It does not put a strain on the computer’s performance, the response time is good and our tests did not reveal any errors or crashes.
