    EDITOR'S RATING

Softpedia Editor's Review for Sophos Anti-Rootkit

    Eliminates hidden applications and processes

Written by Giorgiana Bursuc on November 19th, 2011

Since all computers are connected to the Internet one way or the other, it is easier for malware to spread surreptitiously, security software being the only line of defense against them. Sophos Anti-Rootkit is a solution, specialized in identifying and removing rootkits.

A special type of malware, rootkits get installed on computers and act as legitimate programs, emulating the behavior of a valid application while in fact affecting the functionality of others.

Sophos Anti-Rootkit is a tool that, via a nicely structured interface, enables users to choose the computer areas they want to scan – although it is recommended to scan all the available regions, the process will take more time to complete, so it depends on how urgent the matter is. On the other hand, the application can run in the background, so the PC can be used for other tasks.

In order to ensure transparency, Sophos Anti-Rootkit will display in real-time the paths of all the files it scans, retaining the ones that are suspicious and giving additional details about them such as file description and whether it is advisable to remove them.

Once the scan is complete, depending on the output, the user can either be relieved that the PC is rootkit-free, or, in case malware was detected, choose the best course of action for each file. Sophos Anti-Rootkit already mentions if a certain should not be erased since it might cause PC issues, but in the end, it is up to the user to make the choice.

The main reason why it is preferable to resort to a dedicated application for finding and removing rootkits is that manually erasing registry entries might result in computer instability and decreased performance, whereas Sophos Anti-Rootkit is developed in such a way so as to protect the integrity of the PC.

    Sophos Anti-Rootkit description

Here are some key features of "Sophos Anti-Rootkit":

    Rootkit scanning, detection and removal:
    · Rootkits can lie hidden on computers and remain undetected by anti-virus software. Although new rootkits can be prevented from infecting the system, if you had any rootkits before you installed your anti-virus, they may never be revealed.

    · Removing rootkits without compromising system integrity is particularly challenging and needs to be done with care.

    Simplified management:
    · Using Sophos Anti-Rootkit is easy. Whether you use its simple graphical user interface or run it from the command line, you can easily detect and remove any rootkits on your computer.

    Easy to use:
    · Sophos Anti-Rootkit provides an extra layer of protection, by safely and reliably detecting and removing any rootkit that might already have hidden itself on your system.

    Stay free of rootkits:
    · As part of its complete protection of endpoint computers, Sophos Endpoint Security and Data Protection has an integrated detection functionality that removes and prevents them being installed onto your desktops, laptops and servers.

    Requirements:

    · Requires a minimum of 128 Mb RAM
    · IE 4.0 or higher

    · Support for disk and registry scanning on new platforms: Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2003 SP2, Windows 7, and Windows 64-bit platforms.
    · Sophos Anti-Rootkit uses virus data if Sophos Anti-Virus is installed, and will report threats more specifically than if data is not present.
    · Sophos Anti-Rootkit can now scan every file on the disk instead of just the hidden ones, which will potentially find more malware. This option requires Sophos Anti-Virus to be installed.

Softpedia guarantees that Sophos Anti-Rootkit 1.5.4 is 100% CLEAN, which means it does not contain any form of malware, including spyware, viruses, trojans and backdoors. [read more >]
