    Softpedia Editor's Review for V

    EDITOR'S RATING:

An all-purpose File Manager for Windows with a Dual Pane Interface

Written by Elena Opris on April 3rd, 2012

V is not just a letter anymore - it's an entire software title! This is a file managing system that comes equipped with several other features, compared to Windows Explorer.

Once you open the tool, you can choose the layout between Windows Explorer or dual pane style (Commander or Explorer version).

The interface is user-friendly but there are many options displayed in the main menu and context menu, making V look cluttered.

So, you can copy, move, rename and delete files and folders, modify date and time attributes, view file properties and change file names (e.g. to lowercase or uppercase).

But you can also copy items to clipboard (e.g. directory listing, MS-DOS name) and view the clipboard (e.g. text data, OEM text), create shortcuts and view files in several methods (e.g. as HEX, ZIP).

Additionally, you can display an Explorer tree, view thumbnails, split the panes horizontally or vertically, automatically resize columns, create and organize a favorites list, as well as use a complex search function (e.g. file or text search, look inside archives).

Furthermore, you can use a HEX conversion tool, view an ASCII chart, access Command Prompt, delete temporary files, configure keyboard shortcuts, the toolbar and colors, map the network drive, and many others.

The file manager takes up a low-to-moderate amount of system resources, includes a complete user documentation with snapshots and ran smoothly during our tests. We highly recommend V to all users, especially the experienced ones.

    V description

Here are some key features of "V":

    · V is fast.
    · View/print the contents of ZIP, CAB, TAR, RAR and GZip archives without having to extract the files first.
    · Extract ZIP file contents just like any ZIP file manager.
    · Install ZIP files which include a setup program without extracting.
    · Handles large files with ease - and large really does mean LARGE!
    · A Dual Pane interface lets you view directories side-by-side.
    · Folder Tabs allow you to view favorite directories with a single click.
    · Makes full use of keyboard shortcuts and right-click menus.
    · Files can be viewed in Greenbar mode.
    · The contents of the clipboard can be viewed as if they were a file.
    · V can be extended through use of User Commands.
    · File Renaming - allows you to easily rename a group of files.
    · File Tailing will automatically refresh a file if it is modified while you are viewing it.
    · Files may be fixed at a column position so anything to the left of the column will not scroll.
    · Wrap long lines to the screen or to a fixed length.
    · Columns of text may be copied to the clipboard. Numerical columns can be summed.
    · A formatted directory listing can be copied to the clipboard.
    · Selections may be appended to the clipboard.
    · Regular Expression searching and GREP.
    · Support for 4DOS descriptions.
    · Extensive command line support.

    Limitations:

    · 30 days trial period

    · An experimental Bioinformatics/DNA search which lets you search for amino acid strings and IUPAC codes in files containing DNA sequences.
    · Support for XMIT and AWS files (used in IBM mainframe environments).

    Other minor changes include:
    · Better support for Unicode files containing Asian characters.
    · The ability to change the font used by the Directory/Mask/Device boxes and by the FolderTabs.
    · A change in name from "V - The File Viewer" to "The V File Viewer".
