When developing a game, it is important to reduce the amount of disk space it requires as much as possible, which involves optimizing game files and removing assets that are not essential. This job can be very time-consuming, however, so you may need another tool to help you out.
Unity Size Explorer is a relatively simple utility designed to make it easier to assess the size of your Unity projects and see how they can be optimized. It lets you visualize the data in chart form, and it allows you to add or remove items without rebuilding the game.
After building a game, Unity lists information about the size of its assets in a log file, which can be found in the “\AppData\Local\Unity\Editor” folder. However, while these statistics are useful, things get less clear after you’ve dealt with the largest files in the project.
Thankfully, Unity Size Explorer is here to help you out. All you need to do is launch the application and drop the log file in the main window for the relevant data to be extracted and displayed in chart form.
Once you have imported the log file, the assets are displayed in a tree-like structure on the left-hand side, and you can hide or show any of the items to instantly see how that would affect the game’s size.
Perhaps the best thing about this application is that it saves you the trouble of having to build the game after performing any modifications in order to update the log file. This process can take a lot of time, especially when working on particularly large games.
On the whole, Unity Size Explorer is a great utility for game developers who want to save some time when optimizing their game’s size. It is very easy to use, requires no installation and features a minimalistic user interface.
