Despite the prevalence, ease of use and high degree of reliability of modern instant messengers, formal conversations and important documents are still being transmitted via email to benefit from its timeline-like view of messages and to more easily find and trace back forwarded details.
While a variety of clients for most email providers are available to choose from, they tend to bundle extra functions or adware that many users have no place for in their workflows, which is where LWBlat GUI comes into play.
Seeing the need for a fast-paced email sender based on the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, a series of developers worked together to create Blat, a command-line app for those with keyboard-focused workflows that want to avoid having to navigate various windows and menus to configure their settings. However, given the popularity and accessibility of modern desktop operating systems, an increasingly higher number of users prefer the familiarity of a graphical interface, leading to the creation of the app at hand as a frontend for Blat.
Thanks to the original program’s open-source license, the developer of LWBlat GUI has the opportunity to carry on with the task of continually improving the user experience and updating it to meet newer software standards in spite of Blat’s lack of upgrades since 2014. When summoned, the app greets users to a straightforward tabbed layout that not only lets you input the quintessential sender and receiver details, but also provides the option to save the authentication credentials in the form of proprietary configuration profile for switching between providers on the fly.
Moreover, since Blat itself does not support modern public servers, LWBlat GUI's “Simulator” function comes in handy to display the way in which messages can be received before sending them. Finally, despite its wide array of configurable settings, it is important to keep in mind that messages cannot be sent securely, due to its lack of support for SSL and OAuth, which can be an issue for some providers’ incompatibility with insecure sending.
Whether you happen to work with IoT devices featuring limited space and processing power, or you simply wish to avoid installing proprietary email clients for rarely sent messages, LWBlat GUI’s portable and incredibly lightweight form factor may be the right choice for your workflow.
What's new in LWBlat GUI 1.4.0:
- Added simulator mode for those without private SMTP servers (as modern public ones require SSL and OAuth which Blat doesn't support), so that various settings can be tested to see how a message would have been received had it used those settings
