GoogleMapRipper writes a Unix shell script. That script uses wget to download the images and ImageMagick's montage to combine them to a big map.

GoogleMapRipper is a tool that allows you to automatically create large maps from Google Maps. It is meant to spare us the trouble of having to paste together many screenshots, in order to print a map for a route or a small tour.
