Although it can happen often to feel like you’re losing track of time, it’s quite difficult not to know the exact time by simply looking somewhere specific, given a clock can be found almost anywhere. Computers keep it really accurate, with servers specially created for this task, and if you want to synchronize more computers to a specific zone, then you might want to take Network Time System for a spin.
It takes a little time to get the application installed and running. However, in order to fully benefit from what it has to offer, you need at least two computers. This is because it comes with two components, one that needs to be deployed on the host machine, while the others on the rest of the clients. Also, make sure to install the right one for the corresponding system architecture.
In case you’re using the application over a local network, simply installing and running both components is all it takes. The host is capable of automatically detecting other clients, with results applied in real time. The visual design is mostly the same for both counterparts, but showing different sets of details.
The host main window is fitted with several tabs that let you navigate through server statistics, external time sources, and licensing. By default, the synchronized time is that of the server computer. All related details are shown, along with the number of connected clients, requests, and successful attempts.
Accessing the settings menu gives you the possibility to customize both internal and external time sources. Split into several sections, options for Network Time System can be set to broadcast a specific IP address and using specific ports, or even listen for custom multicasts, and sync with GPS device connected through an available port.
All things considered, we come to the conclusion that Network Time System manages to live up to expectations, providing real time or custom synchronization of time across several computers connected to the same network, or even through a broadcasted IP. Setting it up is a walk in the park, while your effort is reduced to almost nothing, since the process can automatically start when connection is established.
