AKiller is a freeware popup blocker that promises to make web browsing a bit safer by blocking all advertisements in most of your browsers.
The application has been designed to work with the popular web browsers out there, so it’s compatible with Internet Explorer, Mozilla and Opera.
AKiller places an icon in the Windows System Tray to let you control all of its features, with a dedicated button to enable or disable popup protection.
In case the application fails to block a specific popup, it enables users to add special rules and thus prevent the same advertisement from launching again in the future.
The settings screen not only that lets you manage all these rules, but it also comes with import and export utilities to make sure you can save and restore your very own filters at a later time.
Unfortunately, AKiller works exclusively on Windows XP and doesn’t even launch on Windows 7, but it would be more like a waste of time since most popular browsers available nowadays come with built-in popup blockers.
On the other hand, it works smoothly on this particular Windows iteration and doesn’t slow down the machines running it, but it’s pretty clear that it is mostly addressed to older workstations.
All in all, AKiller was a good project at that time, but popup blockers are nowadays available in most powerful web browsers, be they Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox. Plus, some of them come with top-notch filters, so AKiller is more of a waste of time.
