A database export creates an operating system file with instructions on how to re-create objects. It is similar in concept to many vendors' backup operations where a file gets created that has create table and insert into table statements in it. This type of backup operation is common in smaller databases (tens of gigabytes) or when you are interested in backing up a logical portion of the database such as a single user or set of tables.

database import is the reverse operation from a database export and is used to recreate objects in the database. This form of recovey is common in situations where the database is small (in the tens of gigabytes) or the database needs to be shipped to a client, vendor or support group.
