This plug-in will help you hear what the different scale modes sound like.
Scale modes can be thought of as playing the notes of the C major scale (all white keys on a piano keyboard, from one C note to the next C note 7 white keys above it), but starting on different notes:
Ionian (also known as the major scale): C D E F G A B C
Dorian: D E F G A B C D
Phrygian: E F G A B C D E
Lydian: F G A B C D E F
Mixolydian: G A B C D E F G
Aeolian (also known as the minor scale): A B C D E F G A
Locrian: B C D E F G A B
A plucked-string sound is used to create the notes.
Variables and what they do:
1. Scale type: If using the ionian major scale (as an example),
choose between:
0 tonal scale (C D E F G A B C D C B A G F E D)
1 skip (skip notes: c e d f e G F A G B A C B D C {rest})
2 2 triplets (C D E D E F E F G F G A G A B etc...)
3 user's notes list (in the next edit field)
2. User's notes: Using numbers, enter a list of notes (a scale or
tune). For example, using the star (*) key for a rest, Twinkle
Twinkle would be:
0 0 4 4 5 5 4 * 3 3 2 2 1 1 0 *
4 4 3 3 2 2 1 * 4 4 3 3 2 2 1 *
0 0 4 4 5 5 4 * 3 3 2 2 1 1 0 *
(although this long sequence of numbers might not fit into the edit
field).
Twinkle Twinkle is a tune written in a major (ionian) scale.
However, you can choose to hear how this tune (or the other scales)
would be played in a different mode by selecting from the next edit
field:
3. Mode:
0=ionian
1=dorian
2=phrygian
3=lydian
4=mixolydian
5=aeolian
6=locrian
4. Base (tonic) MIDI note number: In the C major scale, C is
considered the 'tonic' note. Of course you may want to hear Twinkle
Twinkle or a scale having a different tonic note. Middle C is MIDI
note 60, while concert A is 69. B below middle C is MIDI 59, so if
you set this field to 59 then you could hear a B major scale when
you select ionian as the mode.
5. Tempo: beats per minute
6. Play scale this many times: self-explanatory.
7. Amplitude: in percentage of maximum volume.
