Scale Changer Lite
Scale Changer Lite is a feather-light piece of software that you can use to play MIDI audio tracks using the Okinawa or Chinese music scales. It features just a few options that can be easily tinkered with.
Since installation is not required, you can save the program files anywhere on the HDD and simply click the .exe file to launch Scale Changer Lite.
Another possibility is to save it to a pen drive or other removable storage unit, in order to directly run it on any computer with minimum effort and no previous installers. Plus, it doesn't add new entries to the Windows registry.
Simple interface and options
The GUI is user-friendly and, although it doesn't include any attractive graphical elements, it has a clear-cut structure that shows all options provided by this application.
Once a MIDI file is opened, Scale Changer Lite automatically starts playing it normally. However, you can switch to Chinese or Okinawa mode with one click (tuning is automatically made), as well as adjust the tuning or select Temperament or Werckmeister mode.
Apart from the fact that you can stop the track to open another one, there are no other notable options provided by this tool. Unfortunately, it doesn't integrate a feature for saving the altered song to file.
Evaluation and conclusion
We haven't come across any stability issues in our tests, thanks to the fact that Scale Changer Lite didn't freeze, crash or display error messages. Unsurprisingly, it had low impact on PC performance, thanks to the fact that it needed low CPU and RAM to work properly.
Too bad that it hasn't been updated for a long time. Nevertheless, you can test Scale Changer Lite for yourself, since it's free.
