Microsoft Flight Simulator is a game which, as the name clearly suggests it, simulates flight plans. In order for this to be closer to reality, aside from sound and the plane panel, it is important to have well-rendered textures.

DXTBmp provides FS (Flight Simulator) fans with 8/16/24/32 bit and DXT Extended manipulation for multiple versions of this game, starting from the 2000 one and above, as well as Combat Flight Simulator 2 and 3.

As the 2000 edition of the game introduces various new texture formats, alongside transparency variations, DXTBmp enables you to load Extended Bitmap, DDS textures or Targa with Alpha files as well as any other compatible and convertible file type. Additionally, the supported save formats bring the ACE DXT1 texture to the table.

Seamless installation and intuitive GUI

The setup process is a breeze, as it does not take very long and it does not come with any offers from third-party products, nor does it require you to configure settings.

The applications packs a minimalistic interface with a common menu bar and a bottom-placed button bar. The right panel hosts the alpha channel while the vast area that covers the left and center sections holds the texture loading zone.

Although intuitive and quite simple, this program proves to be inaccessible for novice users, as it requires some previous experience with textures.

A myriad of options to tweak

It is possible to use it alongside an image editor, and the default one is Microsoft Paint. Nevertheless, you should know you can another one by simply accessing a dedicated entry in the menu bar.

You can send the currently loaded textures to the editor and then reload them after the process finishes within the “Image” menu. Aside from that, you can perform flip or mirror a picture, with the optional inclusion of the alpha channel.

Playing a major part in texture composition, the alpha channel receives a special fully-packed menu with various options such as import, export, create, template, flip or mirror. Once the texture is edited, you can take a peek at the modified texture from the “Preview” menu.


DXTBmp has one and only purpose – to help FS texture editors to quickly and easily design new content for the community. It does not put a strain on the computer’s performance, tasks are completed in a timely manner, yet the interface is not all that appealing. It supports an array of formats and packs sufficient options to satisfy both beginners and experienced users.

To sum up, DXTBmp is an efficient piece of software and cannot be overlooked, especially if you happen to be a Microsoft flight Simulator fan.
