When it comes to applications that help you create tileable (both modular and dynamic) textures, texture sets, and complex patterns and surfaces, most people usually think about Substance Designer. While the app in question is definitely the industry standard, and definitely a must-have for any game dev, there are other less popular alternatives out there ready to give it a run for its money.

While still in its infancy, TextureLab is one such app that aims to become a worthy competitor to Substance Designer. And, right off the bat, it has a lot going for it. TextureLab is an app built with Electron and Vue which means that it’s cross-platform (works on Windows, macOS, and Linux), and, of course, it’s open-source.

It definitely does not have the polished GUI and the incredible feature set that other staple apps have in this category, but the utility works great and is perfectly suited for beginners thanks to its simple nature.

The main window consists of the following elements: a big (node) editor in the middle, a 2D and a 3D view panel on the left side, and a library and properties panel on the right. The 3D viewer is very useful as it provides you with various tiling options (from 1x to 4x), and 4 objects (sphere, cube, plane, and cylinder).

It comes with support for over 25 nodes, it handles resolutions ranging from 1024x1024 to 4096x4096, and it allows you to batch export all your textures, or save and export them individually. Speaking of exporting, it’s worth noting that the app allows you to export your work to Unity. Last but not least, you should know that all filtering and texture generation operations are handled by your computer’s GPU.

Taking everything into account, it’s quite clear that TextureLab still has a long way ahead of itself, as there’s no denying that the competition in this sector is very fierce. Nevertheless, TextureLab is a surprisingly capable texture designer that can be used as an alternative to more popular products of this sort, especially by indie game devs who don’t require advanced capabilities.
