The Mapivi application was designed to be an open-source and cross-platform (UNIX, Mac OS X and Windows) picture manager / organizer written in Perl/Tk. Mapivi is a stand alone tool, there is no need for a web server, online access or a database.
The advantages you have, when using Mapivi as a frontend to these tools are:
· simply choose the pictures to process by clicking on their thumbnail
· useful default values for all supported manipulations
· easy to use frontend
· undo functionality (backup)
· batch processing
Here are some key features of "Mapivi":
· thumbnail

· comments
· EXIF infos (date, time, aperture, exposure time, ISO, mode, camera in a short readable form)
· IPTC/IIM infos

· generate and display thumbnail pictures
· store generated thumbnail pictures in a subdir or a thumbnail database for faster access the next time the directory is opened
