Most pictures you encounter over the web are not shown in full size, because it can put quite the strain on your browser and connection to load high-quality pictures. Thumbnails are small representatives just to provide a preview. What’s more, you can generate thumbnails yourself with the help of applications like Oscar's JPEG Thumb-Maker.
Once installed, you’re free to run the application to see what it’s about. A compact main window is brought up, with the first step being to load pictures. This is only possible through the built-in browse dialog, but the process requires little effort, because an entire folder needs to be selected. You can opt to have subfolders included. A destination needs to be specified as well.
You can only work on JPG/JPEG files. The total number is shown in a dedicated info field, with it updating when including or excluding subdirectories. It’s all up to you to choose how the new files are created using different rules, and parameters. One of them is method, with two options at your disposal like bi-cubic, or bi-linear.
Depending on the project you want to use the new pictures in, quality can be adjusted by writing down a value between 0 and 100, while size is easily specified through desired width, and height numerical values. To export full details, the application can copy EXIF info to the new files.
General rules are set so that pictures are cropped to perfectly fit in page, fit outside by allowing one larger side, or fit inside by resizing completely if necessary. An additional set of rules can be used for portrait images. With it, width and height are reversed so no cropping is done, or you can manually specify crop position.
Taking everything into consideration, we can say that Oscar's JPEG Thumb-Maker comes in handy for creating thumbnails with little effort, and from almost any kind of picture. Adding files is simply done by selecting a folder, while the set of rules can crop pictures to fit in different modes.
