There’s certainly a lot of appeal in an edited photo. There’s usually room for improvement in many stills, doubly so when it comes to RAW photos. Besides the obvious advantage of getting your pictures to look just the way you intend; photo editing is also about curious fun: dialing in your settings and seeing how everything turns out in the end.
Even many dozen years upon its inception, film photography still has an elusive allure of its own. DxO FilmPack gives users the tools to replicate that look on their digital cameras through a series of filters and editing instruments.
More often than not, achieving a filmic look on a digital camera rests on the quality of the filters used. While you can certainly start from scratch and create a filter of your own that emulates film photography, using a ready-made preset, imperfect as it may be, is a good place to start.
What you’re getting here is a generous amount of presets. Depending what you’re working with, some presets may look just right — while others, not so much. That doesn’t mean that you cannot parametrize them to reach a satisfactory result: double-clicking a preset will let you tweak its look for a more cohesive aesthetic.
What would photo editing be without the fun? While opinions on that may vary among photographers, editing is all about experimentation: both in the editing room (or software, in this case) and outside of it. And DxO FilmPack certainly gives you the tools to customize your picture presentation in a way that is pleasing to you.
Notably, you gain access to various film grain and rendering filters that can have a more or less significant effect on your stills, depending on their intensity. Split toning controls for shadows and highlights are likewise available, letting you set custom tones to alter the mood of your shots.
Modifying picture luminance and color parameters is another possibility to take into account. A variety of sliders are available in that sense, so make sure you take the time to experiment with them all.
DxO FilmPack is a lot of fun to use. If you’re a fan of film photography, then all the better, as the presets on offer are very pleasing to look at, while the numerous controls help you get just the look you’re after.
