Softpedia Editor's Review for 3D Image Gallery
|
3D virtual environment for your pictures
Written by Elena Opris on December 6th, 2011
3D Image Gallery is a tool that lets you view pictures in a 3D virtual environment.
It can be tricky to work with this application. Before installing it, you must add the images (up to 265), select the separation of the files (fill parts, equal number of files, custom), and select the target folder for the 3D image gallery.
The program basically installs itself with the images you have selected for it. So, if you want to add new images, you have to reinstall 3D Image Gallery.
Once you initiate the application, you can configure sound and fullscreen settings (resolution, depth, refresh rate), or you can disable fullscreen.
In the 3D image viewer you can configure other options - texture quality, light quality, ground material (wood or mirror), mouse speed, menu color, as well as toggle the display of images behind glass and show picture description, wall effects, water, map, sound, videos, disco mode and lighting, automatic walk, and drunken camera (bump mapping only works with nVIDIA).
The program has a very nice concept, but there are some issues. For example, it can become rather frustrating the fact that your "character" only walks, but cannot run. We definitely do not recommend you to enable the drunken camera because it literally gives you headaches.
Actually, the biggest problem we found with 3D Image Gallery is that, when we entered full screen mode (and we did this three times), the program caused Windows 7 to crash when we tried to exit. A blue screen appeared, and we were obligated to restart the operating system. But this did not happen when we disabled fullscreen mode.
Furthermore, we expected 3D Image Gallery to let us add our own sounds within the application, but that is not possible. You can add your own sound files in the installation folder, though (renaming them is not necessary). Also, the "enable video" feature did not work in our case.
Overall, 3D Image Gallery uses a high amount of system memory (but nothing that exceeds the computer's capacities), and it does not cost anything, so you are free to experiment with it. It's fun!

3D Image Gallery description
|
Here are some key features of "3D Image Gallery":
· Viewing your pictures in a galerie is maybe more exiting than viewing them in "simple 2D"
· You can move freely in the galerie
· Nice environment with different walls, reflecting floor, bump mapping, water, wall effects, ambient background music, ...
· Advanced render modes for having lots of fun (drunken camera, disco mode)
· Video support! You can add .avi - files to the galerie and watch them (this feature requires a very fast machine ...)
· Interactive or automatic galerie mode? It's your choice. Eather you can walk through the galerie for yourself or you let the program do this for you
· integrated map (you don't want to get lost in the virtual 3D-world, do you? )
· You can add comments to every picture (not realized in the creator yet)
· Random picture placement: every picture gets a new frame each time you load a galerie (in mathematical/statistic words: you'll need 4.27*1069 runs to see the same picture consterlation again)
Requirements:
· CPU with at least 1 GHz (multicore - processors will take no advantage)
· 256 MB empty RAM (more ram is needed if you open bigger galleries)
· 20 MB empty HDD space
· 3D-accelerated graphic card with at least 64 MB video ram with OpenGL 1.3 support
