During the evolution of Windows, its integrated codecs have also been updated, replaced and optimized to meet the necessities of users. Ligos Indeo Codec was initially an innovative element for the first Windows flavors and it was later excluded from newer editions as it became obsolete. Those who still need this codec can install Ligos Indeo Codec to their PC.

Indeo Codec was initially developed by Intel, then it was purchased by Ligos Corporation, and it was among the first codecs that would support full-speed video playback without needing to use hardware acceleration. Ligos acquired these patents in an attempt to strengthen their own codec targeted at video game developers and which featured chroma-keyed transparency and hot spot support.

Considering its development was stalled at some point, its initial popularity starting declining and MPEG codec gained more and more ground. However, Indeo was still required for video game cutscene videos.

The current Ligos Indeo Codec package features support not only for Indeo Video version 5.2, but also for Indeo Video 4.5 and Indeo Audio 2.5 codecs - it needs to be mentioned that 3.x video codec is no longer supported or available.
