Avi2Bmp is a simple-to-use program that allows you to extract all the frames of an uncompressed Audio Video Interleave file and save them to a single image with the BMP format.
This kind of software can help you create thumbnails or use specific frames to create GIF animations, for example.
This is a portable app, so installing Avi2Bmp is not necessary. It means that you can save the tool on a USB flash drive or any other removable device, store it on any computer and directly run its executable file.
Thus, you can always have Avi2Bmp with you when you're on the go. As an added bonus, the Windows Registry does not receive new entries, and no files are left behind after removing the app.
The interface of Avi2Bmp is based on a small window with a standard layout. You can load a video by using only the file browser because the 'drag and drop' functionality is not included. Unfortunately, you cannot work with multiple entries simultaneously.
So, you can switch through all the frames of the clip, as well as specify the number of rows and columns of the frames to be displayed. After the output directory and filename are defined, you can start the extraction operation.
The software program needs a low amount of CPU and system memory, has a good response time and quickly finishes a task. The output image has a good quality. We have not come across any issues during our tests; Avi2Bmp did not freeze, crash or pop up error dialogs.
On the downside, the tool does not integrate features for advanced users, and it supports only uncompressed AVIs. Plus, its interface needs some improvements. But we must keep in mind the fact that Avi2Bmp has never been updated.
