Movie Thumbnailer (or, in short, mtn) is a console-based application that makes it possible to generate thumbnails for movies and video files located on your computer.

Interestingly and conveniently enough, it comes with a recursive scan engine that allows it to process files in batch and generate thumbnails for all the video files in one or multiple given locations.

Working with Movie Thumbnailer should not be an issue to those who are familiar with the command console. With a little guidance, beginners should also be able to use Movie Thumbnailer without facing difficulties, especially since the syntax is pretty simple and a detailed usage guide with a few examples is displayed at launch.

Essentially, the executable file should be followed by optional parameters and a list of files or directories to parse.

Relying on the powerful engine of FFmpeg, Movie Thumbnailer comes with support for all the popular codecs and encoding modes, including HEVC, H.265, H.264, MPEG1 and MPEG2, DIVX, MP4, and more. It provides a high-speed engine to generate thumbnails, but it runs at lower priority by default so as not to interfere with your work.

Movie Thumbnailer can generate JPEG thumbnails for your videos and movies, but it also comes with options to customize the output. For instance, you can override the aspect ratio of the input video, ignore certain frames, overlay a text onto the generated image and alter the height of each shot, its background color and its quality. An interesting 3D effect can be obtained by drawing shadows beneath thumbnails.

You can experiment with different settings and check out the output. The examples will help you understand what you can achieve with Movie Thumbnailer. For short clips, you can choose the non-seek mode, while large video files require the seek mode to be activated.

While Movie Thumbnailer (mtn) does not provide a regular GUI, it is easy to use thanks to the simple options and syntax. With automatic blank screen and blurred image detection, this application can help you create relevant thumbnail images for numerous videos and movies on your computer, in batch.

What's new in Movie Thumbnailer (mtn) 3.4.2:

  • add --vtt switch to export previews in WebVTT format
  • add --options switch to pass options to the FFmpeg library
  • aspect ratio defaults to sample ratio from container
  • option -I now needs argument t,o,i or any combination (-It for old behavior)
