Whether it’s a TV show you watch for the plot, or a clip that goes viral on YouTube, videos are a popular entertainment method. Associated files are found under an abundance of formats, just like RM. While codecs are required to play sophisticated formats, some applications are specially created to play specific ones, which is the case with RM Player.
Pay attention to the installer
The application comes in a pretty light package and doesn’t take much of your time with the installation process. However, there are some extra offers bundled there, so before you Accept something or press Next, be sure to double-check all options.
The RM video format was designed by the guys responsible for RealTimes, which you might remember better by the name of RealPlayer. Although you can play it with RealTimes, you might not want to use all of its services, and this is where RM Player comes in handy.
On the visual side of things, the application stores all of its features in a classic window style, with no shiny elements to distract or confuse you. Most of the space is taken up by the preview area where the video is shown, with a lower panel that holds playback options, progress and volume sliders, as well as a few extra options.
Playback controls and other options
Just as the name suggests, the application can only play RM videos, and although this is the core function and purpose, it has a negative impact on overall practicality. What’s more, you need to rely on the open dialog to load videos, because dragging them over the main window has no effect.
The video starts to play as soon as it loads. You can also bring up the playlist to save a list of videos, and even load an existing one under the TXT file format. It’s possible to switch to a full screen view. If you want to grab a picture, a dedicated button lets you take screenshots.
In addition, the application gives you the possibility to control playback more comfortably through hotkeys. Although they can’t be modified, the ones used are pretty intuitive and well-placed. There are a few extra options that let you sync subtitles, set playback speed, or add an automated delay.
On an ending note
Taking everything into consideration, we can say that RM Player comes with good intentions and lets you enjoy RM videos in a simple, comfortable environment. However, it feels a little rough around the edges overall, and the lack of support for at least some other popular file formats is a bit disappointing.
