Microsoft Office Accounting Express, the successor of Small Business Accounting, is a business manager oriented towards small companies that have between 1 and 25 employees.

Despite Microsoft having discontinued support for the product back in 2009, business owners still rely on it to carry out their accounting tasks. However, it does not support local requirements outside of USA and UK, which narrows down the targeted audience drastically.

The product had been distributed with some editions of Office 2007 as well, namely Small Business, Professional and Ultimate, but the restriction regarding the location still remained.

Despite all of these shortcomings, Microsoft Office Accounting Express can still be used for a decent management of small businesses. It provides a rich array of features for organizing tasks, customers, vendors, sales and employees in a comfortable manner.

Highlights include the possibility to create invoices and quotes, track expenses, write checks, manage taxes and payrolls, handle sales, as well as to monitor your customer’s credit via Equifax.

Employees can be monitored seamlessly via the numerous built-in modules that include timesheet creation and detailed activity reports. Furthermore, payments are easily manageable via pay stubs or by importing payroll data from Excel files.

Microsoft Office Accounting Express also provides a wide array of report types that may include extensive details on profit, loss, balance, transactions, taxes and several others.

On the downside, some of the operations will not be carried out properly, because of the lack of support. Features such as Online Sales or the Resource Center (which is similar to a help file) will return missing pages or server errors, which may inconvenience users to some extent.

Despite the deprecated features, Microsoft Office Accounting Express benefits from several other capabilities that can be sufficient for some company owners. Taking into consideration that it’s available free of charge might make a strong argument in its favor.
