Get acquainted with your musical keyboard with the help of this simple application that teaches you the basic chords, how to find and remember them

editor's review

Regardless of domain, every activity needs to be taken up at a young age and practiced in order to reach a professional level. The same goes for music, with a thorough historical background and strong techniques behind the tunes that give you the chills. Dedicated to piano enthusiasts, Free Chord Finder provides a self-learning method to get familiar with your musical keyboard.

Lightweight and easy to deploy

There's no installation required so as soon as the application is downloaded you can take it for a spin. However, since it's built this way, you need to make sure that your computer is equipped with a proper Flash player to take advantage of all features.

Simple interface and interactive keyboard

All buttons and triggers are kept in a compact main window, but you can stretch the borders as much as you want, with the whole layout automatically adjusting. Constantly displayed is a virtual keyboard you can interact with, while corresponding notes are shown when pressed.

A preview area is used to show short descriptions of the chords you select, indicating how to easily find and remember them. These can be selected from a drop-down menu, fitted with basic notes, as well as corresponding sharps.

Far from being a pro

Depending on your selection, you can use the keyboard to see if you've learned a thing or two, with necessary keys to press remaining visible if correctly identified. On the other hand, the application can reveal them, as well as basic triads and seventh chords.

The biggest disappointment is that sound does not always trigger, so the best learning method is with an actual keyboard nearby. Moreover, interaction is only done with your mouse, with no possibility to configure hotkeys, which would have been a more practical approach.

In conclusion

Taking everything into consideration, we can say that Free Chord Finder is not the best teacher from which to learn to play piano. Although nothing compares to an actual person, various alternative apps provide more features, intuitive environments and a better overall experience. If you're looking to become a pro piano player, it's best to look elsewhere.
