Linguistic Tree Constructor is a Windows educational program whose purpose is to help you build linguistic syntax trees from text documents.
The application lets you preview the syntax trees directly into the main window and access several preset options for making phrases and nodes.
You are allowed to expand, collapse, select or deselect a node, pick a range of nodes, or select a single node and simultaneously deselect all others.
Linguistic Tree Constructor lets you import data from plain text, GEN or LTCX file format. You can save the processed documents to LTCX file format so you can easily import the information in your future projects.
You are given the freedom to make, delete or remove nodes, configure the colors of the various parts of the display, turn individual interlinear lines on and off, and zoom in or out of the trees.
You can add labels for nodes in order to perform different types of analyses, such as Rhetorical Structure Theory, RRG operator-projection, Subject-Object-Predicate, or other discourse-level.
Linguistic Tree Constructor is able to work with three different types of trees, namely generic, X-Bar, or RRG (Role and Reference Grammar), and lets you undo your actions, print the information, adjust the colors of the text lines, words in the trees, phrases and syntax nodes, delete words, and insert null elements.
All things considered, Linguistic Tree Constructor integrates a handy suite of features for helping you analyze text in terms of syntax trees. On the downside, it hasn’t been updated for a while, so you can make use of its capabilities especially if you are the owner of an old operating system, such as Windows 2000, XP, Server 2003, Vista or 7.
What's new in Linguistic Tree Constructor 3.1.0:
- The first enhancement is the addition of the ability to display tooltips on the phrase-level buttons and label checkboxes in the left part of the window. See the User's Guide for how to add these to your labels.txt and/or phrase_types.txt files. THIS ALSO MEANS THAT FILES SAVED WITH LTC 3.1.0 MAY NOT WORK CORRECTLY IN OLDER VERSIONS. Care has been taken not to modify the file format unless you use tooltips in either phrase_types.txt or labels.txt. However, IF YOU USE THE DEFAULT labels.txt or phrase_types.txt, YOUR FILE SAVED WITH LTC 3.1.0 WILL NOT WORK WITH PREVIOUS VERSIONS OF LTC. This is because these files now contain tooltips.
- The syntax-node type "Relation" ("R") has been added to syntax_nodes.txt.
- The syntax-node / phrase-type panel to the left has been given a scrollbar that appears if the window cannot contain the full list. This is useful if you resize the window and still want to use the full range of syntax nodes / phrase types. - The default size of the window has been made slightly taller to accommodate the new "Relation" syntax node. The bugfix is that On Mac OS X, the .dmg file now works out of the box on Leopard (10.5). Before, Leopard could show a message saying that the .dmg image was corrupted. It was not, but Leopard complained anyway.
