QuadEquations can generate thousands of quadratic equations for drills and approves the skills of one student master in solving quadratic equations.
This program covers the teaching and learning of quadratic equations that include:
· solutions by factorisation (factoring)
· solutions by “completing the squares
· solutions using the second degree equation formula
Tutorial Sessions:
During the tutorial sessions (through the “Teach Me” button), solution of quadratic equations using factors is explained to help understanding the principles involved. Emphasis is placed on the factorisation of the expression in the equation. Sufficient practice of the ‘cross’ method of factorisation is provided. The ‘completing the square’ method is explained and this method is used to derive the formula.
Practice Sessions:
During practice sessions, students have a choice of three levels of difficult: easy, average and challenging, and sums that must be done using the formula method. Users may key in their own quadratic equations with any letter (except a, b and c) as a variable. Users can also choose the method for solving the equations.
Each correct answer is awarded 10 points, but if a student clicks on the “Help Me”
button and gets a sum correct, he gets only 9 points.
Here are some key features of "QuadEquations":
Tutorial:
· Teaches the solution of quadratic equations by factorisation, by completing the squares and by formula. Special cases of equations involving perfect squares and difference of two squares, using special formulas are also included. It also shows how the formula is derived by using the completing the squares method. Emphasis is given to solution by factors which is important at this level.
Practice:
· QuadEquations is capable of generating thousands of quadratic equations for drills to ensure that the student masters the skills in solving quadratic equations. The student can select to be provided with equations which can be solved by a method or level of difficulty he likes.
· Three levels of difficulty are available: easy, average and challenging. The student may also key in his own equations and let the guide help him solve them.
Worked Examples:
· Thirty worked examples provide help for students who have difficulty in solving the equations.
Reports:
· You can print out a report at the end of each practice session. The report shows each sum with its correct answer and the student's answer marked. It also includes the percentage score, the average time taken to do each sum and other details.
Special Features:
· A step by step interactive guide is provided to help the student solve the equations if he has difficulties. If more than one method is available, the user is allowed to make a choice.
· The guide does not solve the equation for the student but guides him along, providing feedback on his working after each step. This helps the student to learn the method.
· A student can key in his own equation and let the guide help him solve it. This feature can help the student do his homework.
· It allows two players to compete with each other on one computer, reducing the number of computers required for a class by half. Each player can do the sums at his own pace.
· It prints two separate detailed reports, each showing the sums done by the individual player.
