ReadWrite Chinese teaches the 1001 most frequently used Chinese characters. ReadWrite Chinese is an application that features meanings, pinyin pronunciations. Each character includes stroke order illustrations and animations.

ReadWrite Chinese features a Learning List which, at any one time, contains a small subset of the total 1001 characters. Students begin by reviewing the character in the Learning List and then progress to a number of exercises.

If all the exercises are completed correctly for a particular character, it then moves off the learning list and another yet unlearned character replaces it. If a mistake is made in any of the exercises, the character's scores are reset and all exercises must be repeated.

ReadWrite Chinese also includes around 4000 examples that illustrate the use of each of the character.
