Tux Paint is a fun application developed for children. It allows them to draw pictures by using simple tools.
The program comes with a user-friendly interface in which you can pick a background color or picture to start with.
So, you can access basic tools, such as paint, stamp, lines, shapes, text, magic and eraser.
They allow you to select various brushes, penguin figures, shapes (e.g. square, pentagon, triangle, octagon), fonts, special effects (e.g. bricks, cartoon, chalk, color shift, distortion, darken, emboss, fill), as well as shapes and sizes for the eraser.
In addition, you can use the "undo" and "redo" functions, as well as print and quickly save the image by making one single click.
The configuration panel of Tux Paint is independent from the executable file, so that children do not accidentally make any major changes.
In this panel, parents can set up the video and sound (e.g. enable full screen, disable sound effects, select the window size), mouse and keyboard (e.g. disable fancy cursor shapes, keyboard shortcuts and mouse wheel support) and simplification options (e.g. disable shape rotation and stamp control, show uppercase text only).
But you can also configure language, printing, saving (e.g. set an alternative output directory, enable to start with blank canvas) and data preferences (e.g. disable the use of a lockfile). Settings can be restored to default at any time.
The program takes up a moderate amount of system resources and helpful tips are displayed on the bottom part of the screen, at every step of the way. No errors have popped up during our tests. We strongly recommend Tux Paint.
