Whether you would like to remind yourself of how insignificant certain issues truly are in the grand scheme of things or want to lose yourself in the gorgeous vastness of the Milky Way galaxy, Winstars is the right tool for the job. With its extensive options and impressive three-dimensional graphics, this application is a must-have for both space aficionados and daydreamers.
While the sheer amount of controls situated on the margins of the application window may feel like overkill in the beginning, the deeper one dives within the confines of what the app has to offer, the easier it is to realize their importance.
By default, the user is greeted with the planetarium mode, an environment meant to simulate sitting underneath a clear midnight sky boasting all of the planets orbiting across our solar system. However, the application also features a second 3D Navigation mode where one can freely roam the Milky Way galaxy and a get a taste of how space exploration could look like in the distant future.
In terms of controls, the mouse can be used to pan with left click, zoom with the scroll wheel and rotate the area at hand with right click. Moreover, the arrow keys can be utilized for panning across the screen, the trackpad for zooming and the touchscreen for a more natural way of interacting with the digital environment.
In order to maximize your viewing pleasure, the elements present on the screen can be either hidden, enhanced or customized to your heart’s content, thanks to the options available at the extremities of the app’s interface.
On the one hand, items such as boundaries, figures, names and overall coordinates of constellations, brightest stars, planets, asteroids and comets can be shown or hidden using the left side menu. On the other hand, the rightmost menu controls elements such as night mode, the time speed and coordinates of the simulated environment, while also providing a search menu for planets and satellites. The top menu allows for precise navigation using directional keys and cardinal points.
This particular piece of software is a must-have for those who want to dabble in virtual space exploration in an advanced, yet relaxing and pleasant fashion.
