Portable XMedia Recode
Portable XMedia Recode is a simple tool that allows you to convert audio and video files.
Since this is a portable application, it does not require any installation, so your Windows registry entries remain unchanged. It also means that you can store Portable XMedia Recode on an external device and run it directly from there.
The program recognizes audio files (AAC, AC3, MP3, WAV, RA), video files (3GP, AVI, FLV, MP4, MPG, MPEG, MOV, WMV), AviSynth scripts (AVS), playlists (M3U, PLS, WPL), and it supports batch conversion.
The output format can be customized according to the profile (e.g. custom, Apple, BlackBerry, HTC, Microsoft, Playstation 3, YouTube), file extension and format (e.g. 3GPP, ASF, AVI, FLAC, Matroska Video, MOV).
Furthermore, you can select the audio and video codec, output stream type (audio only, video only, audio and video), but enabling audio and video synchronization is possible as well. You can also configure video settings (e.g. framerate, rate control mode, bitrate, color mode), audio settings (e.g. codec, simple rate, rate control mode, bitrate channels) and filters (e.g. video size, scaling mode, aspect ratio, aspect error, zoom).
We tested Portable XMedia Recode by converting a 175MB AVI to WMV. The task was completed in four minutes and thirty-two seconds. During the encoding process, you can select CPU priority (from Idle to Real Time), view elapsed and remaining time, and enable the computer to shut down after a successful task.
Portable XMedia Recode manages to maintain the image and sound quality, but it consumes a high amount of CPU and memory. Also, the Encode button is not always clickable, although there are several jobs added (this randomly happens). The help file is not necessarily useful for everyone, because it is in German.
All in all, Portable XMedia Recode is a great tool for converting audio and video files.
