As there is no setup pack involved, you can save the app directory to any part of the hard disk and just click the EXE file to run.
Another possibility is to save NoteCase to a USB flash disk or similar storage unit, in order to run it on any PC with minimum effort and no previous installers.
More importantly, the tool does not change Windows registry settings, nor create additional files on the disk without your approval.
The GUI is not particularly attractive, as NoteCase prefers a classical look and structure, enabling users to immediately dive into its feature-set.
Comments can be written by creating nodes and connecting them to child nodes, which basically represents the tool's category and subcategory system for content management.
Customize text settings
Several text formatting options are supported. Apart from the traditional cut, copy, paste, undo and redo actions, users can emphasize selected text (bold, italic, underline, strikethrough), change the encoding method and reading order, customize the text and background colors, as well as insert hyperlinks, pictures (PNG, JPG or GIF) and file attachments. A search function is available as well.
Manage nodes and save projects
Meanwhile, nodes can be rearranged in the list, edited, moved, renamed and removed, marked as completed, as well as sorted in ascending or descending order (by root or children nodes). Projects can be saved to NoteCase-formatted files, as regular or password-protected documents (NCD or NCE format), as well as exported to HTML format (with or without tables of contents).
Hotkeys are supported for most commands and they can be turned into anything else. It is possible to switch to full screen mode, wrap words, change the viewing mode by disabling the comment
area, nodes section or both, count all words automatically, and enter full screen mode.
Evaluation and conclusion
The tool is light on the system resources, using low CPU and RAM. We have not come across any stability issues throughout our evaluation. Although it's not particularly attractive and its options are tangled, NoteCase offers a decent set of features for taking notes, including some configuration settings for advanced usage.
