DOSShell Portable this is an applications launcher based on the DOSBox emulator. It lets you create a list with shortcuts to frequently used programs, thus enabling you to rapidly run them in DOS mode.
The key difference between this edition and the installer is that the portable package can be saved in any directory on the disk or even on an external storage device. Worth mentioning is that it's not truly portable, since it needs DOSBox or DOSBox Portable to fully function.
Represented by a common-looking window with a fairly intuitive layout, the interface invites you to populate the list with new app entries. To do so, you can indicate the executable's path (.exe, .com, .bat), display name, extra command-line parameters, icon, a user manual, and description.
It's possible to add as many app entries as you want, organize them into different categories (such as home or work), edit their properties, and remove them from the list.
Before being able to launch the tools, you have to define the path to the DOXBox folder. DOSShell lets you set the preferred mounting drive letter, run programs directly in fullscreen mode, keep the aspect ratio when entering full screen (useful for wide screens), hide the console window, and automatically close DOSBox when the execution ends.
The software utility worked smoothly in our tests, without hanging, crashing or prompting error messages. CPU and RAM consumption was low, so it didn't hamper system performance.
Taking everything into account, DOSShell proves to be a reliable graphical representation of DOSBos, giving you the possibility to seamlessly run programs in DOS from a user-friendly environment.
What's new in DOSShell Portable 1.9:
- DOSBox + DOSShell: tested for compatibility on both the Windows 8 Developer Preview and Consumer Preview.
- Recorded a video tutorial showing how to install and configure the DOSBox emulator and its frontend on Microsoft Windows 7.
- A new program option to keep the original aspect ratio when running in the full-screen mode. That is useful for wide screen monitors.
- Updated the screen shots to Windows 7-styled.
