H2 Database Engine

With its self-explanatory name, H2 Database Engine is a Java-based piece of software that provides you with an efficient set of tools and a web-based interface for creating and managing SQL databases.

The first thing that you should know about H2 Database Engine is the fact that it can be used in embedded mode or in server mode. Also, you should be aware of the fact that it comes with full support for JDBC (Java Database Connectivity) and ODBC (Open Database Connectivity), as well as for APIs.

Assuming that Java is already installed on your computer, the application undergoes a typical and surprise-free installation process. Subsequent to its installation, the app integrates itself in your computer's system tray.

Upon clicking the newly added system tray icon, a new web page with the URL 'http://localhost:8082' should be opened by your default web browser. Basically, the tool offers you a web console that provides you with a quick way to access an SQL database within a streamlined and clear-cut web interface.

If you are familiar with the specific SQL language, commands and queries, then working with H2 Databases Engine's web console should not be a problem. In a few words, almost every element from your SQL database you click, is automatically registered by the web console.

From this point onwards, it is just a matter of choosing the exact query or command you want to run and use the all-encompassing toolbar to run it. Once you run a successful command, right under the SQL script panel, you should be able to view the results of the operations.

As mentioned beforehand, the app can also be used in embedded mode. To do this, you only need to add the 'h2*.jar' file to the classpath, enter the database URL in order to open it in your user home directory and a new database is automatically created.
