As its name implies, File Info is a lightweight application designed to provide you with a simple file scanner and analyzer that displays detailed header information for DOS and Windows executable files.
The application only works using the command prompt and its interface reminds us of old DOS applications. Although simple, the GUI is rather crowded, since all the information regarding the selected file is comprised in a single window. Thus, you can view the executable file name, its format and signature type, alignment file types, as well as the entry point and the RVA code.
File Info is capable of analyzing the selected file and displaying the type subsystem version, together with the creation date and time (the file timestamp) and the size of included images, code and actual data. The required operating system and CPU type can also be viewed.
With the help of this application, you can view the file header size, as well as the NTHdr size. The file checksum and the linker version are other two parameters that the program can read.
The internal file viewer contains options such as goto, jump, filter, align and search. For each parameter, both decimal and HEX values are displayed.
During our tests, the application crashed on Windows 7 and 8 operating systems. Therefore, if you are using a more recent OS, File Info might not be of any use to you.
File Info provides you with a graphical interface for checking file encoding settings and properties. However, given its drawbacks, you are advised to look for a more advanced tool, that can help you analyze portable executable files in a much more friendly manner.
