Balabolka is a software program which allows you to convert text to speech. It supports multiple file types for the input, such as TXT, EPUB, CHM, DOCX, DOC, HTM and HTML.
The interface of the application is clean and pretty intuitive. Opening a text document can be done by using either the file browser or 'drag and drop' method.
The only available voice is Microsoft Anna. Balabolka comes with a wide range of customization preferences which focus on the rate, pitch, pronunciation, volume, spell checking, Clipboard monitoring, timing and text formatting, just to name a few.
Furthermore, you can use a search function, edit ID3 tags, split and convert tracks to other audio formats (e.g. WAV, MP3, OGG, WMA), use the undo function, replace numbers with words, find homographs, insert audio clips, as well as skip to the next or previous paragraph during the speech. But you also have the possibility of switching to a different language for the interface, setting bookmarks, as well as altering the font, colors and skins.
Additional tools of Balabolka allow you to split files, convert items in batch mode to audio, extract text from files, compare two files, repeat text, as well as use a magnifier and translation tool, among others.
The program needs a pretty high amount of CPU and system memory, has a good response time and includes user documentation. We have not encountered any problems during our testing; Balabolka did not freeze, crash or pop up error dialogs. First-time users may take a while to get familiarized with Balabolka's features.
