Keeping important files and folders secure on your computer is not just a task you need to rely on your antivirus for, since it can’t exactly keep other individuals from snooping through your private data while you’re away. However, a simple solution is to add a password protection with an encryption layer, with the help of OhCrypt.
The application depends on Java Runtime Environment for functionality, so it’s best to make sure it’s installed on your PC before taking it for a spin. Decryption also depends on this third-party component, even if performed on other computers, since the application can be carried around on a USB flash drive, thanks to portability.
With the main window up, all you need to do is decide what files you want to encrypt. The neat thing is you can select more files, and even though drag and drop is not supported, the built-in browse dialog allows multiple selection, and isn’t that difficult to use. All loaded items are stored in a list, identifying them by their paths.
There are several algorithms you can choose from before putting the process in motion, such as AES, Blowfish, Serpent, or Twofish. You can access the settings tab for a few more related options. Just so you don’t leave anything behind, the application can be set to automatically remove source files while encrypting, as well as permanently removing traces from the temp folder.
A slider gives you the possibility to set compression ration, which can help you save a bit of disk space. In case you’re planning to take encrypted files with you, there’s the possibility to have encrypted files bundled into a self-extracting program, but not without asking for the password you need to set.
To conclude, OhCrypt manages to live up to expectations, coming as a portable, practical solution on which you can rely for that extra bit of security. The whole process is intuitive enough to make accommodation a walk in the park even for inexperienced individuals, while different algorithms provide more security options.
