ROT-13 Encryption/Decryption

Little to no communication method you use is private, even though you only send the message to one individual. However, you can attempt to secure it with different algorithms, at least to make you feel safe. For instance, applications like ROT-13 Encryption/Decryption help you convert messages to an unreadable format before sending them, but also decrypt to be able to read.

The application doesn’t even need to be installed on your computer to function, meaning you can deploy it on a thumb drive and use on other PCs as well. This method is perfectly safe, because the application doesn’t modify any registries during use, making sure that the target computer’s health status remains intact.

All features are stored in a pretty compact main window, with two text fields. Needless to say that one is used to input text, while the other shows the encrypted version. Unfortunately, you can’t load any kind of file, which means you have to work with the clipboard here, and there’s also a dedicated button to send encrypted text to clipboard.

As the name suggests, the application relies on the ROT-13 algorithm, so don’t expect your text to be impossible to crack. This is because the algorithm doesn’t rely on any randomly generated strings for encryption, but rather scrambles characters with others from the alphabet, and the structure is kept the same each time.

This encryption method means that once you learn the replacement of each character, you can manually decrypt messages yourself. Using the application to do this only requires you to paste in the encrypted text inside the original input field. There’s also a button to instantly interchange fields.

All things considered, we come to the conclusion that ROT-13 Encryption/Decryption comes with good intentions, and makes message encryption a walk in the park. It’s easy to use, and all it takes is a simple copy and paste operation. On the other hand, the level of security provided by this algorithm, and no option to choose a different one, have an impact on overall practicality.
