Hard drives get rapidly filled with data even when you're not trying to download something. Instead, some applications, such as web browsers, often create temporary files when checking for updates automatically. Unfortunately, many of these files get left behind on the hard disk and take up space although they are no longer being used by any process.

If you're looking for a quick and simple solution to regularly clean up the user temporary directory before stepping away from the PC, you can use CleanTempShutdown. This is an ultra-simplistic tool which verifies the temp directory, deletes any containing files without asking for permissions, then proceeds to shut down the system.

Before going any further, you should know that double-clicking the .exe from the downloaded package will immediately turn off your PC, even if you're working with applications, so make sure to save any ongoing projects before taking this step.

A quick look in the temporary folder after restarting the computer reveals that this location is now empty. Because the temp directory gets filled with files all the time, you can basically replace the built-in Windows power-off button with CleanTempShutdown.

If you're familiar with the system's task scheduler, this tool can be set as a scheduled task. Otherwise, a simpler solution is to create a desktop shortcut to it. The app offers to do this on your behalf if you hold down Shift while double-clicking the .exe, creating a desktop shortcut called "Shutdown".
