ShadowBack description
ShadowBack is an advanced and easy to use automatic backup for Windows
ShadowBack's main goal is to help ensure that the user does not lose any data -- without forcing anyone to continually think about backing up their work.
ShadowBack has the ability to watch which files the user changes as they are saved, and back them up as frequently, or infrequently, as the user wishes.
It sports an automatic mode where all the user has to do is insert and label media to keep their machine fully backed up.
ShadowBack knows where many popular software applications hide their data, and can backup just their work, or include application files, without the user having to know where it is kept on their hard drive.
It is capable of ignoring unnecessary files from popular applications (for instance, the temporary files directory for Internet Explorer) reducing the size and frequency of backups.
ShadowBack can backup data from many popular applications while they are still running. Other backup software requires the user to quit applications, such as Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express.
If the user forgets, or neglects to do so, their backup will not include any of their email, contacts or other information stored in these products. ShadowBack can backup from many applications, including Outlook, live.
ShadowBack can optionally backup only the user's work. This is especially useful to keep backup sizes small, saving media. Files the user can restore from installation CDs from many popular applications are ignored, as well as operating system and program files.
It
can compress data, which is important for backups to DVDR, CDR and hard drives (which offer no hardware compression), and encrypt the data to protect it from prying eyes. It was designed to be fast -- many functions are multi-threaded.
The backup and restore functions are capable of accessing the hard disk, the backup media (DVDR, CDR or tape), and process the data (compression or encryption) simultaneously. Even scanning of files is multi-threaded, allowing the fastest possible directory scans, as well as scanning multiple hard drives simultaneously.
The user interface was designed with everyone from the power user to the novice in mind. It provides a powerful interface for those interested in the details of backing up their systems, as well as an automatic interface, where the user merely has to insert and label media, for the more casual user.
