Folders keep all of your files from cluttering up important areas, such as your desktop, as well as to create organized libraries of documents and more. However, more files of the same type can be found, differentiating themselves through minor content updates, and you might want to keep a specific folder with updated files. For this task, applications like ViceVersa Free let you synchronize content according to various criteria.
On the visual side of things, all features are stored in a pretty compact main window, posing no accommodation problems whatsoever. On the other hand, this only applies to the initial step, because setting up sync rules takes you to a larger menu, but ease of use still applies.
In order for the application to trigger its core function, it’s needless to say that you have to specify a source and target. Unfortunately, you can’t just drag them in corresponding fields, and are forced to add a few more seconds to the overall process by using the built-in browse dialog for directory selection. Input fields also keep history, with options to expand them and select previously used folders.
Pressing Compare brings up another window that’s split into two panels. Similar in design, they are used to show elements from both directories, but with a catch. Just as you may have suspected, the application compares files found in those directories, initially showing differences. These don’t refer to content, but rather size, timestamp, as well as CRC.
You can select what to be displayed, including the option to show all files, regardless of state. Indicators are shown to make identification easier. To finish the overall process, you need to pick a method from the drop-down menu. As such, synchronization can be done to align source and target, augment target, refresh target, update target, update and prune target, or force target.
For more management options and flexibility, the application gives you the possibility to also set up file filters prior to sync. This simply means adding various parameters to file name and extension. Before pressing Execute, you can get a preview, just to make sure you picked the right method. Sadly, there are no built-in functions to schedule the whole sync process.
ViceVersa Free is a lightweight, but powerful application that can be used to effortlessly keep content of two folders the same, or one of them updated through a specific source. Although scheduling is not in the set of features, the simplicity of the process lets you set it up in a few seconds, thus making sure each time that everything goes according to plan.
